Santa Barbara, CA -mock cemetery of the U.S. Military Teen casualties

A mock cemetery of the U.S. Military Teen casualties was held in Santa Barbara California on Friday, April 17, 2009, part of the National & International grassroots War Moratorium Movement calling for the immediate end of war & occupation from Iraq, Afghanistan & Palestine. alt

The April 17 actions here, across the country and world mark the continuation of the War Moratorium, to unite individuals and groups who act to end Wars & Massacres, on the Third weekend of each month. The local mock teen cemetery began @ 10am in Santa Barbara, California @ SBCC on the West Campus lawn across from the campus library overlooking Ledbetter Beach and Harbor on the Pacific Ocean. The SB Vets for Peace, Chapter 54 set up 314 "tombstones" for service members between the ages of 18 & 19 that have died in the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan.

Staff, students & visitors passing by on the walkway between East & West campuses were asked to come down on the lawn to place a placard of the colored photo & information of a teen casualty on the "Tombstones." Information about the cost of war and the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, Afghanistan & Palestine were shared. An SBCC form for students, to be taken off the the military's recruitment list, in opposition to the Solomon Amendment were given out.

The Santa Barbara Newspress was there and had a colored photograph of the "Tombstones" and SBCC student Ashley Vanderheim placing a tag of a fallen teen age American soldier on a mock tombstone in the Sat. April 18, 2009, edition on p. A5. The caption read REMEMBERING TEENAGE WAR DEATHS.
