DESPITE a very battered domestic economy and  the urgent need to stop the ravaging of city/state budgets, PRESIDENT OBAMA is asking Congress for a supplemental (read fast track) $83 BILLION for IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN.  A vote could come as early as next week.                                                        Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey blasted the request saying, "I cannot support either of these scenarios. Instead of attempting to find miliary solutions to the problems we face in Iraq and Afghanistan, President Obama must fundamentally change the mission in both countries to focus on promoting reconciliation, economic development, humanitarian aid and regional diplomatic efforts," (SF Chronicle 4/10/09)        ADDITIONALLY ALARMING are the cowardly, unmanned, missile-laden drones, programmed in Nevada, and released on the villages of  innocent civilians in PAKISTAN and AFGHANISTAN.  Let us remember others cherish their families as much as we do ours. THIS IS NOT THE CHANGE WE WENT TO THE POLLS FOR. Please join us for an hour or two on 3rd Friday or Saturday, (3/17-3/18) at a BART STATION or other public place to ask passers-by to protest this INSANITY. If you cannot be physically on the street, PLEASE call SENATOR B. BOXER @t (415) 403-0100) and SENATOR D. FEINSTEIN @ (415)393-0707 and SPEAKER N. PELOSI @ (415) 556-4862 to say "NO" to drones and "NO" to more dollars for war. To participate, contact sfbay(dot)iraqmoratorium(dot)com

Free Movie: Speaking Freely: Vol. 1: John Perkins. Author and former economic consultant John Perkins (Self Proclaimed Economic Hit Man) takes aim at himself, confessing his shameful role in helping organizations such as World Bank and the IMF drive poor nations into crippling debt while enriching U.S. corporations. His social conscience awakened, Perkins finally got fed up and quit his job. Now, he runs a successful nonprofit group that works to help indigenous peoples prote...

We stand vigil at Chelsea Parade (the green in front of Norwich Free Academy). We hold signs and make an effort to remind our "community" that we are still engaged in war. Come stand with us for a minute or longer all are welcome, peace, love and understanding is a must! Most recently the associated press actually identified the wars as a major factor in the federal deficit. Duh! More war, more debt - for those inclined to worry about the almighty first. Support o...

We are having a free screening of "Rethink Afghanistan" by Robert Greenwald, in anticipation of the Obama administration's "new" Afghanistan strategy. When I joined the anti-war movement in 2003, I never thought we would still be struggling against two wars and a global recession six years later. But walk on we must. Pizzas and sodas would be served if enough demand. Hope to see you there! Please RSVP at ll2150@columbia.edu. http://rethink.bravenewtheaters.com/screening/show/13436-stamford

Walter Reed Vigil: Middle of the 7100 Block of Georgia Ave, Every Friday 7-9 PM. We are now in our fifth year! Care for the Wounded! Full benefits for all veterans! Bring All The Troops Home NOW! War Economy No--Peace Economy Yes! We are a mixture of people from many groups or no group at all; we have firm support from the local labor community and from union activists all over the country. We have the endorsement and support of US Labor Against War, the support of members of Code Pink, Gray Panthers, ISO, UFPJ and ANSWER, Veterans for Peace, and leaders in the community such as Reverend Graylon Hagler of the Plymouth UCC. Anti-torture activists have stood with us, students from schools around the country; we have had sisters and brothers from Japan, Finland, Germany, France, and England come to stand with us. Soldiers and workers from inside Walter Reed have stood with us as well as veterans of other wars and a veteran of the current war in Iraq. No politicians have yet made the four mile trek from the Capitol building to stand for the women and men they sent to do their fighting. We honor our sisters and brothers who have had to fight these wars by calling for their real needs to be met as well as ending the wars and occupations and bringing all our troops home. "Bring the troops home" is the most fervently supported slogan by the recovering soldiers inside Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Walter Reed Army Medical Center is now over 100 years old, is as large as the Vatican, and houses over 5000 wounded and recovering soldiers. The doctors and staff work hard for the wounded but they are understaffed and over worked. Surgeons have been known to hide themselves away to find the privacy to weep for the shattered bodies they have had to heal. The nursing staff and other workers at WR are dedicated, caring, and among the most opposed to the current war. Walter Reed Army Medical Center is less than five miles from the halls of Congress and rarely receives a visit from the people who permitted this war and continue to fund it unless it is for a photo op. Congress has passed bills cutting medical benefits for the wounded--including for brain trauma injuries, the most prevelant of the war, and PTSD--soldiers have to prove it was not a pre-existing condition. In fact, studies show that over 90 per cent of troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering from PTSD--and in 2008 over 140 active duty soldiers committed suicide.

We gather at the World Peace Bell, an awesome place and symbol, at 4th and York Sts. in Newport, KY. We talk to all comers. We hand out a variety of literature to advocate for peace and social justice. We protest the withdrawal timetable for Iraq, troop increase in Afghanistan, and a recent US bombing that killed women and children in Pakistan; in fact, an end to all violence. We see roughly 1300 to 1800 cars in that hour. We have a reading or prayer circle, gathering strength from each other.

World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
June 19th being the summer solstice weekend, as well as the Iraq Moratorium vigil, we will gather to remember the effects of war on Mother Earth herself as well as on her people. War takes a tremendous toll on the environment, from manufacture to the use of armaments that contaminate soil and water for decades to come. In particular, we call attention to the use of depleted uranium-tipped weapons that are causing horrible birth defects. Bring a sign or borrow ours. Everyone welcome!

We are elated that many soldiers have come home (though they are not out of harm's way), and mindful of those still in Iraq and Afghanistan. We meet again at the World Peace Bell, 4th and York Sts., Newport, KY across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. We stand with thousands across the country working to bring all the troops home, to stop endless wars and to bring our tax dollars back to our starving communities. 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17th, 2010. All Welcome!

4:30PM - 5:30PM

A block from the Ohio River, sunny day, we hope, greeting rush hour traffic with our message of PEACE in the face of all violence. Glad to celebrate some troops home from Iraq; mindful of the 50,000 still left there. Not celebrating the 9th anniversary of the start of war in Afghanistan, the longest war in U. S. history. How long must we go through all this? Will we allow endless war? All questions open for discussion. Join us at 4th & York Sts in Newport, Kentucky, 41071

Say no to war and the erosion of our civil rights as a result of the "war on terrorism." TSA- a division of Homeland Security, is requiring all citizens at airports to be patted down including private parts, or submit to a full body scan that irradiates and also reveals the naked body. There is no more basic human right that of control over one's own body. Take a stand with us at the World Peace Bell. We give out hope in the form of handouts. Corner of 4th and York St., Newport, KY.
12/17/2010
4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
Dress warmly and join us at 4th & York St for the last War Moratorium vigil of 2010. The troops perform their duties in the mountains and deserts sands of Afghanistan and Iraq, so uncomfortable weather won't kill our resolve to speak out against these two unholy wars. Afghanistan is the longest war in American history and what do we have to show for it? In this season of peace, let us pray for the safe return of our children and return to sanity in U.S. policy. Support the troops, end the war!

This week is our 200th vigil at the World Peace Bell. We celebrate this milestone as well as the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King , Jr. His words and his works inspire us to carry on the tradition of taking peaceful action, to call for social and economic justice for all, and to end the wars. Join us at 4th and York Sts. in Newport, KY.

4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
Should be clear and warmer by Vigil time at the World Peace Bell. We are still observing the War Moratorium, standing for peace, talking to our fellow citizens about military spending and how it robs domestic programs. The 2 wars got barely a nod in the State of the Union address, and there was little mention of cutting military spending in the budget deficit discussions. Seems only logical that ending two illegal and immoral wars would go a long way toward easing the budget crisis.
04/15/2011
4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
Though it is not-war, U.S. Military are acting in Libya at a cost of millions per day, in addition to 140 million/day already spent on Iraq and Afghanistan. We have to wonder, with the general economy low and unemployment and deficit high, how many wars and non-wars can we afford?? No matter, we're putting it all on a credit card for our children to pay later. Fight the insanity, bring our troops home. We will again vigil at the World Peace Bell, 4th and York Sts. Please join us.
05/20/2011
4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
Third Weekend vigil to observe the nationwide War Moratorium. We have military actions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Libya. Soon billions of dollars will flow to countries with uprisings in the Middle East. You would think the U. S. has a budget overflow instead of a budget deficit. Even more disturbing is that we've traded the blood and brains of soldiers for the muddle of murky reasons given for going to war in the first place. It's high time to bring them home-now!
08/19/2011
4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
Vigil at the World Peace Bell this Friday, Aug. 19, 2010, 4:30-6PM. With one out of 5 children in the U.S. going without adequate food, I can't imagine why we're spending trillions on military action in 5 countries: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Yemen. Oh, and Somalia. Why aren't the politicians and pundits talking about cuts in the most bloated aspect of our budget==military spending? If you can't join us, please call congress and let your reps know your priorities: 1-202-224-3121.
09/16/2011
4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
Come join us this Friday, September 16, 2011 from 4:30 to 6 PM for the War Moratorium vigil and to see the new memorial to 9/11 at the World Peace Bell. While we probably will never forget the events of 9/11, we must also remember that none of the hijackers were Afghanistani or Iraqi citizens. Very few if any valid reasons for prolonging these wars can be cited. We gather to call for an end to these wars without reason that are draining our economy and leading to needless loss of lives.
10/21/2011
4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell Kentucky
Please join the N. KY Justice and Peace Committee at the World Peace Bell in Newport, KY this Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 from 4:30 to 6:00. Wind and rain can’t deter us from showing up when our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan (and other diverse places) labor in our name, whether those wars are just or unjust, limited or endless war. Only stopping 2 wars would add greatly to our moral and fiscal health in the U.S.
11/18/2011
4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
With the Occupy Movement happening around the country many people are putting their bodies in the streets, in the jails and on the line to speak about economic justice for all. The N. KY Justice & Peace Commitee continues the campaign to end the wars asking "How Many Wars Can We Afford?" Just two wars cost $41 million per day, money that would be better spent here at home. We need everyone to stand up for their beliefs, or we all may go down in poverty. Join the War Moratorium Vigil.
12/16/2011
4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
Vigil at the World Peace Bell sponsored by the Northern Kentucky Justice and Peace Committee. Now, as we welcome troops home from Iraq, it seems the U.S. is picking a fight with Iran over a drone plane "lost" over that country. Will this be our third war to kill civilians and wreck another country over false pretenses? Let us end all war and demand a reduction in military spending to reduce our deficit. Let us quit spilling the blood of our children based on lies. No more endless war!
01/20/2012
4:30PM - 6:00PM
World Peace Bell, Newport Kentucky
Inspired by Martin Luther King's legacy of peaceful protest we stand on the blustery street corner at 4th and York Sts, to call for an end to the policy of endless war. Since Bin Laden is no longer a threat, the war in Afghanistan seems more pointless than ever. Troops remain occupying the embassy in Iraq, the largest in the world. We also have to be vigilant that diplomatic measures are taken to prevent the demand for war with Iran. Silence is consent. Let your voice be heard.

Teach-In: Rethinking Afghanistan & Iran
Where: Asbury United Methodist Church, 324 N 29th St, Richmond, Virginia 23223

Free and open to the public

Co-sponsored by Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality and the Richmond Peace Education Center.

It's been eight years since the U.S. invaded Afghanistan, making this the longest U.S. military engagement since Vietnam. Many thousands of lives have been lost, including nearly 900 GIs. According to the Center for Defense Information, the estimated cost of this war will reach $439.8 billion by the end of this fiscal year. And the Obama administration is now weighing whether to commit tens of thousands more troops.

The evening will feature Larry Syverson, member of Military Families Speak Out whose son Branden is serving in Afghanistan and stationed at an outpost in Taliban territory. Last week, Syverson organized a protest in downtown Richmond to mark the eighth anniversary of the Afghanistan war, saying: "We need to end these wars and bring ALL our troops home NOW." Syverson will discuss his experience as the parent of a soldier serving in Afghanistan and discuss his opposition to the war.

We will also screen excerpts of the film "Rethink Afghanistan." Has the US war in Afghanistan brought stability to Afghanistan or security to the U.S.? Are the Afghan people better off today than they were eight years ago? Or are we merely laying the groundwork for a longer and wider war, a war without end? These are some of the questions raised by the new documentary film "Rethink Afghanistan," directed by Robert Greenwald, the man behind "Outfoxed," "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price" and "Iraq For Sale." (For more information, see http://rethinkafghanistan.com.)

 Rethink Iran

Nearly every day we are told by government officials and the media that Iran presents a dangerous threat to the U.S., to Israel, to world peace in general. Iran, which hasn't attacked another country in more than 200 years, is presented as a dangerous aggressor that must be contained, sanctioned or even attacked. The similarities to the build-up to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq are striking.

What's the real story behind the headlines? Is Iran trying to develop a nuclear bomb? Does it want to destroy Israel or any other state? And what can U.S. peace activists do to prevent yet another war?

These are some of the questions that will be addressed by Phil Wilayto, one of the few U.S. anti-war activists to have actually traveled in Iran. Phil is editor of The Virginia Defender newspaper and author of "In Defense of Iran: Notes from a U.S. Peace Delegation's Journey through the Islamic Republic." Along with peace activists Cindy Sheehan and Kathy Kelly, he was a speaker at the Conference to End Sanctions sponsored by the National Association of Muslim American Women and held Sept. 29 at Trinity University in Washington, D.C.

With the world in the midst of the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, we cannot afford to sit by and let our country drift into a wider and deeper state of permanent war.
